Spent Friday (or was it saturday?) night talking with Brad the Welder to get ideas and recomendations for securing the camper to the trailer. I put in an order for some steel, and secured some of his scrap metal for my welding tasks.Sunday was a big work on the trailer day for me and my neighbour Dan. I’m lucky enough to have friendly and helpfull neighbours that have cool tools ![]()
Much welding to be done, and first on the list was to repair a cut in the frame of the trailer. It was cut out so the septic tank could be drained. I raised up the camper and will drain off the side, so I don’t need that cut out any more.
I ran over to Brads, stole a chunk of 1/4″ and traced the hole onto it. Had to cut it with the sawsall, I don’t have a cutting torch
It really didn’t take that long anyway. Dan did most of the welding. It was all stick welded and I’m not so good at that… and it was his welder… so there you go.
While he was fixing the cutout, I was using his chop saw to cut the rest of the metal to length.
I need to widen the trailer to get both quads on… it’s 7 foot wide between the fenders, and I need 8′ for both quads. Lucky for me the fenders are 9″ wide, so I just needed to add on about 6″ behind the fenders to the end of the trailer.
So I cut all the metal and stole some big pieces of steel from Dan to make the extensions 8″ wide. A lot of welding later, about 4 hours or so, the extensions were done. Also added some pockets for securing the ramps.
So the front tire of each quad rests on the fender when both are loaded up, and there wasn’t enough fender to hold the whole tire so I added a piece to ‘lengthen’ the fender (the only welding I did). Downside to this is I have to gun it to get the quad up… then have to hammer the brakes to keep from slamming into camper.
I was a little slow on the brakes a few times and launched the quad into the camper… the winch fairlee makes nice holes in the tin siding
Guess I’ll add a little checkerplate there too…
I built a little step/porch in the middle of the trailer for the inside tires of the quads, and I think that will work out just fine. Got some more trim work to do, and a bit more welding before the porch is done…. but I need to get the septic tanks in before I can button it all up. And only 6-ish weeks left before May long… hope I make it… so much work to do.
*Just* got off the phone with my tank guy and looks like 1 more week before it gets in… then I have to fit it, and take it back for the fittings to be re-spun
I’ll snap some pics and attach to this post in the next few days.
